Sodium-Ion Battery Technology: ARCI and Voltasun Sign MoU to Advance Commercialisation

Sodium-Ion Battery Technology

New Delhi: A new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to support the industrial performance validation and commercialisation of Sodium-Ion Battery Technology, marking a key step towards advancing alternative energy storage solutions in India.

The agreement focuses on sodium-ion pouch cells developed using Sodium Vanadium Phosphate (NVP) cathode powder material.

The International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), an autonomous research and development centre under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, signed the MoU with Voltasun Technologies Pvt. Ltd. on 15 December 2025.

Under the agreement, ARCI will develop and supply 80 units of 5Ah sodium-ion pouch cells for performance evaluation and potential commercial deployment of Sodium-Ion Battery Technology.

Sodium-Ion Battery Technology Developed and Validated by ARCI

ARCI has successfully developed Sodium Vanadium Phosphate (NVP) cathode powder material and demonstrated its performance through the fabrication of NVP-based sodium-ion pouch cells under the ANRF, MAHA EV project.

These cells have already undergone validation at the standard laboratory scale, while field-condition testing and validation are currently in progress.

Voltasun Technologies Pvt. Ltd., a materials-to-cells startup, specialises in battery active materials, cell manufacturing, scale-up, consultancy, and research and development services.

Leveraging its established industrial customer network, the company will evaluate and expand the application potential of ARCI’s Sodium-Ion Battery Technology, particularly for stationary energy storage applications.

Phased Collaboration for Performance Validation

The collaboration will be implemented in two phases. Phase I includes the supply of 80 sodium-ion pouch cells by ARCI, followed by detailed performance validation and feedback from Voltasun.

Phase II will involve the supply of two additional sets of 80 pouch cells each, to be executed through a separate amendment agreement.

The partnership highlights ARCI’s ongoing efforts to convert indigenous research outcomes into industry-ready solutions and aligns with India’s broader objectives of achieving self-reliance in advanced and sustainable energy storage technologies.
